Description from the seller

Very beautiful and rare triptych of devotion in gilded wood, adorned with metal hinges. This handsome decorative religious object reveals on its inner face the biblical scene of the Adoration of the Magi, after the Flemish Renaissance master Jan Gossaert (Mabuse) (1478–1532).

Description of the work:

• Central panel: The Virgin Mary presents the Child Jesus to the kneeling King Caspar, surrounded by Melchior and a classical architectural setting.
• Left leaf: The King Balthazar portrayed with the features of a Black prince bearing a golden chalice.
• Right leaf: Saint Joseph sheltered in front of the stable.

The whole of the inner panels perfectly imitates the effect of an oil on panel from the period, enhanced by a gilded wooden frame in a Gothic/Renaissance style with a beautiful aged patina and decorative craquelure. The reverse of the outer leaves features a textured raw patinated wood finish, typical of these spiritual objects.

About the original painter and his work:

The reproduced original here is the absolute masterpiece of Jan Gossaert (also known as Jan Mabuse, c. 1478–1532), a major Dutch-born painter of the Flemish Renaissance. Influenced by his travels to Rome, Gossaert pioneered the introduction of Renaissance Italian perspective and architecture into Northern Europe, while preserving the meticulous realism characteristic of Flemish painters. Painted in oil on wood between 1510 and 1515, the original painting The Adoration of the Magi is a globally celebrated national treasure, today proudly exhibited at the National Gallery in London. The historical renown of this work explains the great care given to the religious art reproductions created in the 20th century by devotional workshops.
