Peter Donkersloot (born 1959 in Arnhem) studied at the Arnhem Art Academy and then worked for many years as a sought-after freelance advertising illustrator. He worked, among others, for the prestigious advertising agency FHV-BBDO, in the footsteps of his father Piet Donkersloot, who was also a renowned illustrator.

Since he decided at the end of 1987 to devote himself completely to free-lance painting, he has gained wide recognition for his expressive portraits of iconic cultural figures. Especially his series around The Godfather (Don Corleone), Scarface, and sports legends such as Muhammad Ali and Conor McGregor have become trademarks.

Donkersloot distinguishes himself technically by applying the traditional oil-painting technique of the old masters. By layering transparent glazes over one another, he creates depth, warmth, and texture in his paintings that cannot be obtained directly from a tube.

A notable recent project is his series of large Amsterdam cityscapes based on historical photographs by the impressionist G.H. Breitner. Donkersloot used Breitner’s never-painted photo material from the early 20th century as a basis to bring the cityscapes to life on a colossal scale, with his own modern twist.

In addition to his visual art, he has chronicled his turbulent and boundless life as an artist in the candid book "The Boy Who Became a Painter".
