Jim Nagoya is a French painter-conceptual artist whose powerful, instinctive work sits at the crossroads of expressionism, street art, and contemporary abstraction. Trained at the prestigious Beaux-Arts Schools of Paris and Amiens, he develops, very early on, a visceral artistic practice nourished by an inner need to represent and reinvent the world.

His work, rich in symbols and raw energies, draws inspiration from major currents such as the Cobra movement, German Expressionism, Street Art, Surrealism, New Figuration, and American Abstract Expressionism. He joined the Street Art collective TBS alongside Jone Hopper and Skepa, exploring the interaction between art and urban space.

Jim Nagoya’s universe is an alchemy of major influences: Basquiat, Bacon, Picasso, Corneille, Condo, Jonone… but also the literary and cinematic worlds of the Beat Generation and the California underground of the 1960s. This inspiration has taken him as far as Los Angeles, where he collaborated for several years with a renowned painter on the art scene.

Back in France, Jim Nagoya pursues a bold, affirmed trajectory. He has been awarded multiple times at national salons, and he regularly exhibits at the Grand Palais in Paris; today his works are included in numerous private and public collections (mayors’ offices, departmental councils, etc.).

A personal, free, vibrant and engaged pictorial language — a mirror of the impulses of the contemporary world, imbued with a unique symbolism.
