Charles Pinot Duclos was the protégé of Madame de Pompadour and Madame de Tencin, very present in all philosophical salons and literary cafés, a member of the Society of the Caveau; he was named to the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres in 1739. The citizens of Dinan elect him mayor of their town in 1744 and, in that capacity, he takes part in the States of Brittany. On January 26, 1747, he is received into the Académie française even though he had composed only three novels (libertine works), a ballet, and a historical essay, The History of Louis XI (1745). In 1750, he replaces Voltaire as historiographer to France, who was departing for Prussia. He becomes perpetual secretary of the Académie française in 1755. In this role, he proves very active and provides substantial service to the academy, taking a major role in the 1762 edition of the Dictionary, for which he wrote the preface.
The History of Louis XI was published in 1745 despite its dry and often epigrammatic style. This essay shows an effort toward impartiality and relies on serious research. This work opened the door to his election to the Académie française (1748) and earned him the post of historiographer of France.
