Estimated period 1940–1950; material: earthenware; made by Digoin in France; green octagonal, footed bottle coaster with a glazed earthenware trompe-l’œil basket-weave pattern, 12.3 cm wide and 1.3 cm high, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Original French bottle coaster manufactured by Digoin & Sarreguemines, dating from circa 1950.
This octagonal, footed coaster is made from moulded glazed earthenware or faience and decorated with a detailed trompe-l’œil basket-weave pattern. The relief imitates woven wicker, surrounded by a rope-like border. It is finished in a rich emerald-green glaze with darker green shading and hand-applied gold-coloured detailing along the outer rim and feet.
The piece was intended to be placed beneath a wine, water or serving bottle to protect the table surface and linen from moisture and drips. It originally formed part of a larger coordinated table-protection service that included a large trivet, two bottle coasters and matching knife rests.
The underside carries the period printed factory mark with “DIGOIN” above the crowned shield, “SARREGUEMINES” and “FRANCE”, together with a secondary factory or production code. 12.3cm width, 1.3cm high. Condition is good and consistent with age. No cracks, major chips or repairs are visible. There is age-related rubbing and loss to the gilding around the edges, corners and feet, together with light surface and underside wear.
