With this square-format artwork, Medsan projects Mario, Nintendo’s absolute video game icon, out of his Mushroom Kingdom to wander the rainy, neon-drenched Japanese alley, umbrella in hand.

The treatment plays on a striking contrast: the character is rendered in an intentional pixel art style, faithful to his 16-bit sprites, while the setting unfolds a cinematic realism — glowing signs “ラーメン”, “酒”, red lanterns, wet cobbles reflecting all the colors of the night. Seen from behind, Mario advances alone down this izakaya alley, a tiny retro silhouette in a world of photographic richness.

The piece captures a moment of poetic solitude that humanizes the indomitable hero. Far from mushrooms and pipes, the mustached plumber is no more than an anonymous passerby in the rain, perhaps in search of a hot bowl of ramen. Medsan gently questions what becomes of a pixel icon once immersed in our reality.
