Bibliography:
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, becoming a teacher there as well. His initial Mannerist/Macchiaiolo style underwent an evolution starting only from the forties.
His painting is steeped in naturalism and seeks above all landscape themes or scenes of daily life. The countryside is the frequent setting for his paintings, painted en plein air in Maremma or in the Mugello. The markets of Vicchio are very picturesque and sought-after, where Rontini shows an eighteenth-century gaze on a reality rudely projected onto daily life. There is no doubt that some of his best works have roots precisely in this environment and unfold over a period from the 1920s to the 1930s, when the artist indicated the year of composition with Roman numerals, as happened somewhat with many of his contemporaries from Leghorn (Livorno). Among his pupils we mention the Vicchio natives Rutilio Muti, Armeno Mattioli, and Foresto Marianini.
He was among the founders, in 1920, of the Gruppo Labronico.
Among the exhibitions in which he participated, notable ones include the 1922 exhibition “Fiorentina Primaverile” where he showed 3 works, the Milan Biennial of 1925 with the work La coltratura, in addition to the Gruppo Labronico exhibitions. In October 2018, a retrospective in his honor was inaugurated by the Fondazione Livorno.
A street in Livorno has been dedicated to the author."
