Jacques Germain was born on January 13, 1915 in Paris and died in 2001 in the same city. A student of the Académie Moderne directed by Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant, he left in October 1931, on the advice of Blaise Cendrars and Fernand Léger, to study at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he studied under Vassily Kandinsky, becoming the only Frenchman to have studied at this school. Returning to Paris by bicycle in 1932, he immediately went back to Frankfurt to attend the courses of the constructivist painter Willi Baumeister, where he met his future wife, the literary critic Marthe Robert. Captured during World War II, he remained in captivity in Germany for three years before fully dedicating himself to painting upon his return to France. Close to Camille Bryen, Jean Fautrier, Hans Hartung, Georges Mathieu and Wols, he presented his first works in 1948 at the Galerie des Deux Îles, then exhibited regularly alongside Soulages, Kandinsky, Sonia Delaunay and Alberto Magnelli. A prominent figure of Lyric Abstraction, he participated in numerous salons (Salon des Surindépendants, Salon de Mai, Salon des Réalités Nouvelles) and exhibited in the finest Paris galleries as well as internationally. A major retrospective was dedicated to him at the Couvent des Cordeliers in Paris in 1997."
