Martaban storage jar - Earthenware - China - 20th century

Offered is a special earthenware Martaban pot, around which a dragon in a lighter color slip has been applied. The shape of the dragon is also accentuated with incisions.

This is an authentic Chinese Martaban stock pot, a rare well-preserved example of glazed earthenware bowls that once stood at the center of the international trade networks of the Maritime Silk Road. This pot is made of high-fired stoneware with a dark speckled glaze and shows the characteristic surface texture, glaze variation, and earthen base, which are so typical of Martaban.

Martaban pots originated in southern China during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) and were produced for more than two millennia. By the 18th century production extended to regions in Southeast Asia—including Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Southeast Asia—driven by Chinese migrant potters and local workshops.

This pot is 21 cm high, with a diameter of about 19.5 cm. The weight is 2024 grams.
