WORK:
Mary and Elizabeth, both pregnant, meet by joining hands in a gesture of greeting and mutual deference. Behind Mary appears Joseph, while behind Elizabeth Zechariah is seen. In the background a small procession of onlookers comments on the scene. In the foreground a woman breastfeeds an infant, a gender motif that reflects, in earthly terms, the divine motherhood of the protagonists. Pyramidal arrangement and warm color harmonies on a dark background, of Renian–Maratta lineage.
