Artistic description
A work of great presence dedicated to one of the most representative motifs of the Spanish pictorial tradition: the fighting bull. The composition presents several bulls in a spring landscape of intense brightness, with three specimens dominating the foreground and other animals integrated into the depth of the field.
The painting stands out especially for an energetic, gestural brushwork, laden with body and texture, clearly visible on the bodies of the animals and in the vegetation. The artist builds the figures through patches and overlapping strokes, moving away from an academic representation in search of expressiveness and movement.
The palette combines blacks, grays, and bluish tones in the bulls with yellows, greens, ochres, and small reddish accents in the landscape. This contrast reinforces the powerful presence of the animals against a bright, colorful spring setting. In the background, trees and structures are resolved in a freer, sketch-like manner, creating depth without diminishing the prominence of the main scene.
The work bears the signature "Francisco" in the lower right corner. On the back of the canvas is handwritten the title "La Primavera del Toro," accompanied by a rubrica. The stretcher also bears Grumbacher, New York, seals of an American manufacturer of art materials; this element relates to the support and should not be interpreted by itself as an indication of authorship or provenance of the painting.
It is presented with a wide classical molded frame in dark reddish tones that greatly enhances the composition. A decorative, large-format piece with strong character, especially suitable for collectors of bullfighting painting, Spanish figurative art, and equestrian and rural themes.
