VOLTA - "She Dissolves Into Roses"

The sky is a pink that has not yet decided to become night, and from there falls a slow rain of petals: white, coral, violet, some red as a drop of blood. The body lying to the right is made of the same matter, and as you look at it it flakes away — arms, belly, shoulder opening into brushstrokes that no longer hold the form together. No one witnesses it, save for two flamingos standing on the shallow water, indifferent, absorbed in themselves. The aquamarine green rises like vegetal foam, the blue slips in beneath and drags everything toward the bottom of the canvas. Here beauty is not celebrated: it is allowed to melt into the color, with a calm that has something cruel about it.

Volta’s research moves along the track of a return—not nostalgic, but active. The great tradition of European painting is the starting point: the period each work evokes, from time to time. But the gesture with which this heritage is traversed is unequivocally contemporary. Color does not illustrate; it breathes. The brushstroke does not describe; it vibrates. What remains of the past is the deep structure — a certain idea of the body, of space, of light — while the surface is altogether present, altogether alive. Volta does not quote, he restitutes: his compositions seem to emerge from a shared cultural memory, brought to light with different eyes.
