Description from the seller
Bonheur-du-jour writing cabinet in Napoleonic III Style
This refined piece, a writing desk with a bonheur-du-jour, perfectly embodies the eclectic and sumptuous taste of the Napoleonic III period during the Second French Empire at the end of the 19th century, an era characterized by a deep love for historic revival and ornate splendor. Although not an exclusive collectible piece, it relies on theatrical decoration and embodies that mix of functionality and decor which makes any room instantly more sophisticated thanks to the addition of a touch of late‑19th‑century Parisian elegance.
Main Features
• The "Boulle" Aesthetic: The piece pays homage to the famous technique of André-Charles Boulle. The front panels and drawers are adorned with intricate inlays realized with brass sprigs and scrolls on a dark background, creating a vibrant and luminous contrast typical of the period’s taste.
• The Structure: It presents as a bureau à gradin (writing desk with a raised top): a console base with cabriole legs enriched by gilt bronze (or gilt Zamac) fittings that elongate its silhouette, and a two-door upper section with drawers at the base, topped by a decorative cornice.
• Bronze/Brass Details: The fittings are present on the profiles and on the “shoulders” of the cabinet, enriching its silhouette without making it overly heavy.
• Effect Materials: The dark external shell is designed to make the metal stand out, while the interior reveals mahogany, a detail that testifies to the artisan care typical of late-century French production, aimed at offering solidity and a pleasant chromatic warmth for everyday use.
