These robust mechanical letter scales were standard equipment in German post offices and are increasingly sought after by collectors of postal history, industrial design and pre-war German engineering.

This example is particularly attractive thanks to its production year and double-sided construction with enamel plates BRIEFWAAGE in old German style, featuring two original tariff plates protected behind glass. The front and rear displays allowed both the postal clerk and customer to read the weight and corresponding postage rates simultaneously.

The scale operates using a precise mechanical lift-weight mechanism. As an item is placed on the weighing platform, the indicator moves across the integrated tariff chart, displaying postage rates for various postal services.
