The work is part of the landscape tradition of the Olot School, developed under the tutelage of Joaquim Vayreda. The tonal construction, the prominence of the atmospheric phenomenon, and the contemplative vision of nature reflect the influence of the Barbizon School, especially Corot and Théodore Rousseau. The diffuse light of the horizon and the loose brushstroke also incorporate a sensibility close to Impressionism.

Biography of the author:
Enrique Galwey was a prominent Catalan landscape painter. He began his training at the Barcelona Academy of Fine Arts and later studied under Joaquim Vayreda in Olot. His stay in Paris allowed him to study Barbizon landscape painting directly and to become acquainted with Impressionist innovations, influences that he integrated into a painting of atmospheric character and naturalist sensibility. His career and training are documented by the Prado National Museum, and his work is represented in collections such as the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.

A seaborne scene with marked horizontality and a deep atmospheric load. The composition presents a dark, serene sea topped by a sky covered with dense gray clouds. A narrow band of light along the horizon introduces a delicate contrast and suggests the arrival or disappearance of light after the storm.

In the central area appears a rock formation that extends diagonally toward the foreground, contributing depth and guiding the gaze toward the horizon. The palette, dominated by grays, subdued blues, deep greens, blacks, and light ochre hues, conveys a sense of isolation, melancholy, and stillness.

The brushstroke is broad and synthetic, more impasto on the rocks and softly diffused in the sky. The absence of human figures reinforces the absolute prominence of the landscape and the atmospheric changes.

Frame:
It is presented with a molded wooden frame, with a stepped structure and a gold finish combined with brown tones. Its classic profiles and aged patina harmonize with the sober character of the seascape. Shows signs of age and minor wear.

The work shows restorations and signs of aging consistent with its age.
