A contemporary figurative register strikingly different from the artist's urban scenes: a young woman curled up on a wooden chair, knees drawn toward herself, head resting on crossed forearms, eyes closed. The body tightens into an architecture of angles — elbows, shins, shoulders — which the eye traverses as much a construction as a figure.

All the painting is treated in simplified flat areas: the flesh tones built up in sharp planes of pale pink, ivory, warm shadow and greenish gray, without gradation, like facets assembled. The blue-white drape that falls from the chair is painted in broad light planes, while the dark blue, petrol blue and gold-yellow striped tights introduce a bold graphic motif that structures the whole composition. An inky black mane, lips and nails in vivid red, a few black strokes on the cheek: the accents are rare but violent.

The background, a vast field of tender yellow-green glazed irregularly, isolates the figure and gives it its quiet. One recognizes the psychological tension and the elongated limbs of Egon Schiele, combined with the flatness and the chosen color of contemporary figurative painting — this way of saying everything through cut and contour rather than through modeling.
