Description of the work
“Pain” is a portrait that explores the thin line between the mask and the human being.
The work presents a face split into two halves: on one side the forced smile of the clown, symbolizing social representation and hidden emotions; on the other, the naked face of the individual, marked by time, fragility, and a tear that becomes a silent testimony of the human experience.
The fault crossing the face does not separate two different people, but two aspects of the same identity. It is the crack that exists between what we show to the world and what we keep inside us.
With intense, material-rich painting, Nush Menna confronts one of the most universal themes of contemporary existence: the contrast between appearance and truth, between show and vulnerability, between the need to smile and the right to suffer.
The work belongs to the artist’s research into contemporary archetypes and the examination of human identity, a reflection that threads through most of her painting production.
Pain does not seek to offer answers, but invites the viewer to recognize themselves in that crack, in that exact point where the mask breaks and essence surfaces.
