[HERTENBERGER] - Gustave FLAUBERT: Salammbô. Paris, Paul Durupt, La Tradition, 1944-1947. With the original etchings of F. Hertenberger.

Originally this work was not sold bound but in loose leaves; for those who wished to bind it, the publisher mentioned that it would be necessary to wait until the end of 1948 to do so, the time for the engravings to dry perfectly. It was bound by an amateur in 2019. This amateur binding is simple but correct; it is red cloth with corners, spine with 6 nerves in red cloth, title piece handwritten taped onto the spine. Wear and handling wear (without severity) on the spine and the hinges. The guard pages have been mounted on an off-white crêpe paper with garland motifs; the hinges have been reinforced with a thick white tape. You may consider a new binding if you wish, although this one suffices in my humble opinion; the interior is in perfect condition, the deep black of the engravings is very present and enhances these superb etchings; a beautiful book to collect. This edition, begun in June 1944, was completed in November 1947.

With 12 full-page etchings outside the text including 1 in the frontispiece and 3 double pages, 27 etchings in the text including 7 double pages protected by serpents; 233 pp.
The typography, hand-set, was executed by the printery "La Ruche"; the etchings were taken from the presses of the Taille-douce Printing Workshops, A. Ragosta being the workshop chief. It was Albert Winter, foreman, who directed the work at the presses and produced the proofs under the direction of the artist. The pressmen were Georges Kirstetter, Ch. Schmit, Guy Aner and the two foremen Albert Winter and Léon Aubert. Realized by Paul Durupt.
