Ancient Chinese (Canton) carved-work chest, probably made from a wood such as palmwood or boxwood. Such chests were made in the early 20th century for Western export.
Canton carving is known for its extremely deep relief (high relief).
The piece depicts an idyllic scene from daily life at the imperial court or a well-known scene from Chinese mythology.
The box is in used condition with wear matching the age of this fine box/chest. Two small pieces are missing from the corners; there is no key or key plate; see the photos for a clear view. They are part of this description.
Will be carefully packed and insured shipped.
