Description from the seller
Important Greek icon representing Christ Pantocrator, created around 1990 according to Byzantine Orthodox iconography tradition.
This icon consists of a plaque in solid silver 950/1000 finely worked in repoussé (riza) and mounted on a black wooden panel. The face of Christ is painted by hand, following traditional techniques of Greek hagiography, offering a remarkable contrast between the richness of the silver decor and the finesse of the polychromy.
The back retains its original certificate "Made in Greece", indicating: "Hand-made Sacred Image – Made of Pure Silver 950 – Byzantine Art – Copy of Sacred Image from the Byzantine Museum". This certificate authenticates a high-quality Greek production inspired by models kept in Byzantine collections and intended for the international market.
The silver decor features particularly meticulous repoussé work. The draperies with deep folds, the finely chiseled cruciform halo, the ornamental borders, and the traditional Greek inscriptions testify to true artisanal craftsmanship. The open book reproduces the famous passage from the Gospel according to Saint John (John 8:12), characteristic of representations of Christ Pantocrator.
This icon belongs to a series of Greek icons in 950 silver today sought after by collectors of orthodox religious art. Comparable pieces, made with the same certificate, the same technique, and the same materials, are known on the international market.
