Box - Wood - Touka-tsuishu

This piece is the lid of an inkstone box crafted using the "piled vermilion" technique, inheriting the elegant art of ancient lacquer carving. Introduced from China to Japan, it evolved into the unique style of piled vermilion lacquer. Layers of vermilion lacquer are repeatedly applied, creating a warm and thick layer. Then, using a knife as a brush, a magnificent landscape is carved. Distant mountains rise in undulating waves, ancient pines stand strong on the nearby bank, pavilions stand overlooking the abyss, and travelers stroll leisurely across a small bridge. Rocks, trees, pavilions, and clouds all float on the vermilion lacquer surface. The varying depths of the relief carving condense the essence of the landscape onto the small box surface.
