AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

I am offering here a large, original antique oil painting from around 1920/1930, painted by the German painter Professor KURT KEMPIN (Kurt William Kempin), 1874 - 1972. It is painted on thick painting board and signed on the right side in red! The size is 99 x 74 cm, with the original frame 110 x 85 cm (will be shipped with the frame)! The condition is still fairly good for its age (no restorations, etc. apparent), only the painting board is partly slightly wavy! The frame shows minor signs of aging! Insured shipping with tracking! No shipping overseas, to the United Kingdom, or Switzerland!!

Further info about this painter:
Kurt William Kempin was born in 1874 in Giebichenstein near Halle/Saale. He completed the Karlsruhe Art Academy and became a decorative painter at the Darmstadt Court Theatre in 1896. In September 1911 he was appointed Court Theatre Painter. He belonged to the Darmstadt Court Theatre as chief stage designer until 1921. On the initiative of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, he created, on the occasion of the performance of Oscar Wilde’s “Salome” in 1907, a stylized stage with three-dimensional constructions. He differentiated himself from the then-common illusionistic stage painting of the Wilhelmine era. Kurt Kempin contributed to a “renewal of the theater” with his numerous stage sets and sought to establish a connection with the artists of Mathildenhöhe. In 1915 he was awarded the title of Professor by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig.

After leaving the Darmstadt Theater, he worked as a painter and private painting teacher. He held teaching assignments, among others, at the trade schools in Darmstadt and in Bensheim. In 1925 he supplied the designs for the wall decorations of the large concert hall of the Kurhaus in Bad Nauheim. His stage-design legacy, as far as preserved, is located in the theatre collection of the University and State Library of the Technical University of Darmstadt.

The frame visible in the photo is provided as a service and is not an integral part of the artwork. Any damage to the frame does not constitute a valid reason for complaints or order cancellations.
