Luigi Pagan (1907-1980) - Piazza San Marco

Splendid and important oil painting on panel by the celebrated Veneto painter Luigi Pagan (1907-1980), depicting one of the most iconic and fascinating views in the world: the majestic St. Mark's Square in Venice with the façade of the Basilica.

The work is a masterful example of Pagan's twentieth-century vedutismo, characterized by a very light palette, vibrant play of light and a deft use of thick, spatula-applied brushwork, capable of conveying the lively and contemplative atmosphere of the Venetian lagoon.

Luigi Pagan (Chioggia, 1907 – Venice, 1980), one of the most important and beloved Venetian vedutisti of the twentieth century, renowned precisely for his views of Venice and Chioggia characterized by extraordinary luminosity and vibrant brushwork, almost impressionist.

The view depicts the majestic façade of St. Mark's Basilica bathed in light, with the square animated by little scenes of people and a hint of the San Marco basin on the right. The contemporaneous box frame in wood and gilt is simply perfect and maximizes its significance, complemented by a brass plate engraved with the artist's name and the title.

Frame: Magnificent contemporaneous box-frame in precious wood and gold, complete with wooden passepartout and original brass plate engraved on the front ("Pagan - Piazza S. Marco - Venezia").

Condition: Excellent. The painted layer is sound, clean, with vivid and bright colors. The frame is intact and in excellent condition. Only the frame has a crack at the top-left corner.
