【Product details】

Made in Heisei 7 (1995), this Kyoto ware tea bowl by fifth-generation Yoshizo (五代 与し三) depicts the traditional Chatsubo Dochu, or tea jar procession. The softly irregular bowl is covered in a warm white crackled glaze, with a lively procession painted in black, blue, red, green and purple, enhanced with raised enamel and gold-coloured accents.

The principal motif shows a large ceremonial tea jar wrapped with red-and-white cords, accompanied by attendants, a packhorse and a tall banner. The Chatsubo Dochu was the formal procession used to transport specially selected tea from Uji to the shogunal household in Edo, making it a distinctive subject associated with Japanese tea culture and history.

The interior is painted with stylised green and blue hills and trees, while the rim is finished with a dark brown edge. The underside bears the artist’s impressed mark.

The Yoshizo kiln traces its history to Kyoto’s Gojozaka pottery district, where the first-generation Yoshizo established an independent workshop in 1912 after separating from the family business. He studied within the renowned Kiyomizu Rokubei tradition and devoted many years to refining his ceramic techniques. In 1995, the kiln received the name Kippogama (吉峯窯) from Maeda Shodo of Zuiho-in, a sub-temple of Daitoku-ji. Successive generations have preserved and developed these inherited techniques, particularly in the production of tea utensils.
