Sentier parmi les rochers, an oil on canvas landscape by the Catalan post‑impressionist school, Spain, dating to the 1940s, 47 × 56 cm, sold with frame, original edition.
Description from the seller
Interesting oil on canvas from the Catalan school of the 1940s, depicting a rural landscape of Mediterranean character crossed by a dirt road that winds between rocky terrain, scrub, and scattered vegetation.
The composition is organized through the curved tracing of the path, which begins in the lower left corner and progressively guides the viewer’s gaze toward the background of the landscape. This device creates depth and articulates the different areas of the work, from the stones and shrubs in the foreground to the tree masses and the faintly suggested elevations in the distance.
The landscape responds to a direct and naturalistic vision of the surroundings, linked to the Catalan landscape tradition of the first half of the 20th century. The scene is built with a visible, agile and descriptive brushstroke, especially expressive in the treatment of rocks, low vegetation and the irregular surface of the terrain.
The palette combines reddish browns, ochres, muted greens, grays, whites and soft blue-ish tones. The contrasts between the path, the illuminated stones and the vegetation areas add chromatic variety and effectively convey the dry, open luminosity of the Mediterranean landscape.
The treatment of the foreground stands out, where the stones and small plants are resolved with a brushstroke more marked and rich in body. In contrast, the background is progressively simplified with lighter tones and less defined shapes, favoring the sense of atmospheric distance.
The work features a signature in the lower left corner, although its reading is difficult and does not allow for a secure attribution. For this reason, it is prudently cataloged as belonging to the Catalan school of the 1940s.
The painting shows some defects appreciable in the photographs.
It is presented with a classically tasteful frame, consisting of a gold frame and a wide light interior area. The frame shows dirt and defects, so it will be sent as a gift, with no commercial value and not part of the artwork’s valuation.
It is recommended to carefully examine all photographs before bidding, as they are an essential part of the description and allow a precise assessment of the painting’s and frame’s state of conservation.
