Description from the seller

Antonius Bynaeus – The Crucified Christ, or Explanations of the Histories of the Passion, Death, and Burial of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
Dordrecht, Joannes ’t Hooft, 1725.
Sixth edition, revised and corrected.
An attractive early 18th-century Dutch work by the theologian and scholar Antonius Bynaeus (1654–1698), devoted to the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ.
Bynaeus approaches the subject not only from a theological perspective, but also discusses the historical background of the Crucifixion in considerable detail, drawing upon Jewish, Roman and other ancient sources and customs.
The work is particularly interesting for its illustrations concerning ancient life and the practice of crucifixion. It contains copper-engraved plates and numerous engravings/illustrations in the text, including depictions of ancient dining customs, Roman coins, various forms of the cross and methods of crucifixion.
Printed title page in red and black.
Bound in a contemporary full vellum binding with raised bands and handwritten title to the spine.
Collation: 580 numbered pages, followed by extensive indexes, including the Bladwyser and Namen der Schryvers.
Condition:
Good condition for a book of more than 300 years old. The contemporary vellum binding shows age-related soiling, staining, rubbing and wear, particularly to the spine and extremities. The text block is firm. Pages show occasional age-toning, spotting, staining and small marginal defects/creases. Some old annotations are present. Please see the photographs for a good impression of the condition.
A particularly appealing copy in its old vellum binding, with fascinating illustrations documenting the historical and archaeological context of the Crucifixion. In total 5 copper plates.
Pages: [34], 580 , [ 36].
