Figure - Deckeldose in Form eines Löwen - Silverplated

An extraordinary and intricately worked, figurative betel-nut box from Cambodia.
Motif: The container is artistically shaped in the form of a traditional guardian lion (Foo-dog / temple lion). The expressive face with an open mouth, fine teeth, and the relief-like, flowing fur give the object an impressive presence.
Function: It is a two-part casket with a removable lid, whose halves fit together precisely. Originally, such boxes in Southeast Asia were used to store betel-nut utensils.
Material & Craftsmanship: Made of metal with a fine patina and elaborate chiseling/engraving. The inner surfaces faithfully reflect the three-dimensional form of the animal figure.
Condition: Beautiful, age-appropriate preserved condition with a nice patina (see original photos). A decorative collectible and an absolute eye-catcher for enthusiasts of Asian art and antiques.
