Endang Eduard Abedy (1922-1975) - Javaanse boer met twee waterbuffels

This painting was created by the Dutch-Indonesian artist Endang Eduard Abedy (often listed as Eduard Abedy Endang). He was born on January 16, 1922 in Bandung (Java) and died in December 1975 in Amsterdam.

He worked, among other roles, as a painter, court painter, and lecturer at the academy. In addition to his artistic career, he later worked as an Indonesian diplomat in the Netherlands. He tragically died in December 1975 at the age of 52 when he tried to escape during the notorious South Moluccan hostage-taking at the Indonesian consulate in Amsterdam.

His work closely aligns with the "Beautiful Indies" (Mooi Indië) style, in which idyllic, precolonial and early twentieth-century Indonesian rural life is central. Characteristic are depictions of expansive rice fields (sawahs), hard-working farmers, and water buffaloes (karbouw/ water buffalos). This specific oil painting shows a Javanese farmer with a traditional straw hat (caping) plowing the muddy land with two water buffalos in preparation for rice cultivation.
