About the artist:

Antoni Tàpies was born on 23 December 1923 in Barcelona. His love of art and literature showed early. During a long convalescence from a lung ailment, Tàpies began to paint and draw. In 1944 he began studying law, which he abandoned in 1946 to devote himself permanently to art. The early paintings by Antoni Tàpies still orient themselves toward the works of artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, and Joan Miró. After a surrealist and dadaist phase, his works became increasingly abstract. In 1947 the painting “Zoom” appeared, a programmatic work for his later oeuvre. In 1948 he co-founded the artists’ group “Dau al Set,” of which he became the most important representative.

In 1950 Antoni Tàpies received a grant from the French government that enabled him to stay in Paris. Also in 1950, the first solo exhibition took place in Barcelona. In 1951 Tàpies traveled to Belgium and the Netherlands. In 1953 he spent a short time in New York, where a exhibition of his works took place. In 1958 he participated in the Venice Biennale and thereby gained international recognition. He was represented at documenta in Kassel in 1959, 1964, 1968 and 1977.

Antoni Tàpies was regarded as the most important representative of Spanish Informel. He mixed sand, cement, marble dust, and glue into his paintings. He scraped the paint away and reapplied it until the surface resembled weathered masonry. Throughout his life, Tàpies engaged deeply with Eastern philosophies. In search of expression, he integrated individual letters, signs, crosses, as well as objects or garments into his works. Tàpies’s material- and wall-based images appear mysterious and meditative. He himself did not describe himself as an abstract artist, but as a realist who strives to make reality graspable in his works. In 1984 Antoni Tàpies founded the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona. The artist died on 6 February 2012 in Barcelona.
