The Rose Cultivation. Practical Manual for growers and enthusiasts of roses by W.C. Spoor belongs to the earliest Dutch-language professional books that are entirely devoted to rose cultivation. The work appeared in 1858 and offers an extensive manual for both professional growers and private enthusiasts. The author describes the main rose classes and their varieties, gives instructions for cultivation in open ground and in pots, and bases himself on the latest foreign professional literature, supplemented with his own practical experience.

About W.C. Spoor only limited biographical information is known. From the title page it appears that he was an experienced rose connoisseur who derived his knowledge from both current professional sources and his own observations.
