AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Impressive antique Lepper leather bicycle saddle, made in the Netherlands and estimated to date from circa 1910–1925.

A particularly characterful early bicycle saddle with a substantial genuine leather top and an elaborate heavy-duty sprung steel construction. The impressive suspension system, with large coil springs and multiple steel supports, gives the saddle a distinctive appearance characteristic of early bicycle engineering.

The original Lepper maker’s mark is still visible in the leather, naturally softened by many decades of age and use.

This saddle is original and has never been restored. It has been carefully and patiently cleaned by hand while deliberately preserving its authentic appearance, patina and signs of age.

The original leather has been carefully cleaned and conditioned several times. It is not hard or severely dried out, but remains supple and pleasant to the touch. The leather naturally shows signs of its considerable age and previous use, including surface wear, creases, marks and patina.

The steel frame, springs and mechanical construction have also been carefully cleaned. Surface oxidation was removed where appropriate without over-restoring the metal or erasing its authentic aged character. The construction is solid and substantial.

Please note: two small screws/fasteners are missing from the front section. This is the principal defect and is clearly shown in the photographs.

The saddle is both functional and highly decorative. Its solid sprung construction and supple leather make it suitable for use on an appropriate vintage or antique bicycle once the two missing front fasteners have been replaced.

At the same time, the beautifully aged leather, authentic patina and impressive exposed spring mechanism make it an exceptionally decorative collector’s piece and a genuine eye-catcher.
