Pair of Japanese natsume tea-ceremony lidded containers, one plain wood-grain natsume and one black lacquer natsume with gold and silver hira-makie depicting bamboo leaves, sold together, with the larger piece measuring 5 cm high, 7.5 cm wide and 7.5 cm deep.
Description from the seller
Item Description
This lot consists of a set of two natsume (棗), lidded containers used to hold matcha in Japanese tea ceremony. Both pieces feature the characteristic rounded, drum-like form and close-fitting lid typical of natsume.
The larger piece is turned from plain wood and finished with a semi-transparent coating that highlights the natural beauty of the grain. Concentric annual rings spread across the top of the lid, while the body displays a striped pattern of varying tones. The pale heartwood visible near the rim is also a notable feature.
The smaller piece is finished in lustrous black lacquer, with a design of stylized bamboo leaves and flowering plants rendered in gold and silver hira-makie, depicted in flowing brushstrokes across the lid and body.
Dimensions
Height: 5 cm
Width: 7.5 cm
Depth: 7.5 cm
Weight
98 g
Condition
Both pieces fit well at the lid and are in generally good condition. The wood-grain natsume shows the natural character of the bare wood along with minor surface wear consistent with age and use. The black lacquer natsume retains its glossy finish and the makie design remains intact, though it shows the light signs of use typical of antique lacquerware. Visual inspection has revealed no cracks or losses in either the lacquer or the wooden body.
Additional Information
This set comprises two pieces: one plain wood-grain natsume and one black lacquer natsume decorated with gold and silver bamboo makie, sold together. Japanese, antique. Materials are turned wood (wood-grain natsume) and lacquered turned wood with hira-makie in gold and silver (black lacquer natsume). The dimensions and weight listed refer to the larger, wood-grain natsume.
