Description from the seller
Large Portuguese wall panel of 24 hand-painted azulejos – floral motifs – c. 1950–1980
Object description
Beautiful large decorative wall panel, composed of 24 hand-painted glazed earthenware tiles (6 × 4), presumed produced in Portugal and executed in the traditional blue-and-white azulejo style.
The panel shows an alternating composition of elegant floral motifs in varying shades of blue. Each decorated tile features a separate flower depiction and is combined with more lightly executed tiles. Small stylized corner ornaments visually connect the individual tiles into a single harmonious whole.
The decoration aligns with the Portuguese tradition of so-called figura avulsa azulejos: tiles with separate, standalone scenes. The blue-and-white rendition clearly shows the historical influence of Dutch/Delft tile decoration.
The floral motifs are hand-applied and display differences in line work, brushstroke, and color intensity, giving each decorated tile its own character.
Along the panel’s edges, red- to brown-firing earthenware shards are visible in several places. The combination of these shards, the glaze finish, and the decoration style supports an Iberian and presumably Portuguese origin. A specific manufacturer or workshop has not been identified.
The 24 tiles are securely mounted on a wooden backboard. On the reverse side there are metal hanging brackets, allowing the large panel to be presented as a complete wall object.
Condition
Good used vintage condition, appropriate for age and material.
- 24 glazed earthenware tiles on wooden backboard.
- Hand-painted blue floral decorations.
- Small natural variations in painting and glaze.
- Locally light edge and usage marks.
- On some outer edges, red-/brown-firing earthenware shard is visible.
- Wooden backboard equipped with metal hanging brackets.
- Normal light signs of aging and use.
The tiles are mounted and the individual backs are therefore not visible or inspected separately.
The photos are an integral part of the description and give an accurate impression of the decoration, execution, and condition.
