Harry Torczyner commissioned this work in the summer of 1963, and the artist delivered it to him in August 1964. Torczyner had Magritte asked to paint a self-portrait in the spirit of the self-portraits of two Flemish painters, Rubens and Ensor, in which the artists are depicted with hats. The title of the work was conceived by the Belgian poet and prominent member of the Belgian surrealist movement, Irène Hamoir.
The lot will be well packed and sent by registered mail.
