In “Naughty figures,” the human figure and portrait become fertile ground for symbolic transgression. It is not just about bodies; it is about gestures that disobey, forms that escape the norm, identities that fold and unfold in a constant game of displacements. Each painting is an ambiguous scene where mischief is not merely an act of humor or naughtiness, but a critical strategy: a way to subvert the expectations that the viewer brings to the act of looking. The series is built on a deliberate tension between what is recognizable and what overflows. The figures and faces, although they allude to tangible corporeality, refuse to be domesticated by the gaze. They contort, dislocate, fragment. They do not obey the rules of decorum nor the conventions of gender, beauty, or posture. They are there to discomfort, to seduce, to provoke. The title “Impressive face” alludes to that fragile moral classification with which we organize the visible world: what is permitted and what is forbidden, what is serious and what is frivolous, art and vulgarity. These people do not ask for permission. They infiltrate. They laugh. They display themselves without apologizing. In their disobedience, they become uncomfortably free. And in that freedom, they reveal what is often hidden behind the silence of what is “correct”: the desire to look, but also the fear of being seen.

Carlos Asensio was born in Castellón in 1986. At an early age he began his academic training under the tutelage of Cuban artist Amaury Suárez.

He holds a Doctorate in Fine Arts, with superior Cum Laude honors, and has a Master’s in Artistic Production from the Universitat Politècnica de València. He has also completed a Studio Program at the Berlin Art Institute where he received instruction from renowned artists such as Bernhard Martin, Larissa Fassler, Nikola Röthemeyer, and Various & Gould. His research work has led him to participate in several international university conferences, as well as to publish in humanities journals such as Human Review or Peter Lang.

Among his notable achievements are several solo exhibitions, including those at the Centro de Arte Tomás y Valiente in Fuenlabrada, the Museo Municipal de Albacete, and the Centro 14 in Alicante. As for group shows, he has exhibited both nationally and internationally. In the collective exhibition Ciclamen for the Léucade Gallery in Murcia, a collaborative project at the DXIX Projects space in Fort Collins, two editions of GlogauAIR’s Open Studios, and BAAM#3 at Monopol Berlin. The traveling exhibition Atlas del Arte Español held at the Sala de Exposiciones de la Junta Municipal de Usera, the Sala Mauro Muriendas in Torrelavega, and the Centro Cultural O Vello Cárcere in Lugo. The various exhibitions carried out with the Infinity Art project at fairs such as the Affordable Art Fair in Amsterdam, Art Madrid, or Estampa in Madrid. The 2019_n3 collective show at Piramidón Centre D’Art Contemporani in Barcelona, the Art Spring 2019 event held in Berlin, six editions of Marte, the International Contemporary Art Fair in Castelló, the III Biennial of Open City Arts in València, or the II Call of La New Fair in Madrid.

Furthermore, some of his works are present in important private collections such as the Museo Europeo de Arte Moderno and Piramidón Centre D´Art Contemporani in Barcelona, the Museo Arte Contemporanea Sicilia in Catania, and public institutions such as the Museu de la Ciutat de Castelló. On a private level, his work is present in collections in Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Greece, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, and the United States.
