AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

An extremely rare Chinese porcelain plate dating back from the reign of the Kangxi Emperor (1662 – 1722). In the middle, the plate is beautifully decorated with a large peony surrounded by a laurel wreath, all in the colours blue/red/gold. The rim is decorated with a woven crown of thorns, which according to the New Testament, was placed on the head of Jesus during the events leading up to his crucifixion. He was forced to wear this instrument by his captors both to cause him pain and to mock his claim of authority. Accordingly, this piece of art is called ‘Suffering of Christ’. The base is marked with a pictogram enclosed within a double ring.

Condition: excellent – only one hairline visible, not restored.

- Diameter: ca 21.5 cm.
