Description from the seller
Edward Hopper: “Summer Evening, 1947”.
In 1990 uitgegeven door Taschen.
Conditie: deze offset-litho is in zeer goede staat.
Formaat: 44 x 31 cm.
In Hopper's paintings, couples are typically used as a means to express hope or loneliness.
Here, however, the man and woman on the veranda, both young and dressed in late-1940s style, form a deviation from the artist's melancholic relationship paintings.
Nevertheless, the scene is imbued with inner tension. The two figures, lit as actors on a stage, stand almost stripped of all defensive mechanisms in the bright spotlight, yet seem to feel safe.
Their meeting place is a defined area, and the last territory to be conquered is the woman's body.
The colors and concentrated composition make this an almost symbolic painting.
It escapes a single, clear interpretation, but just as Hopper's other works on similar themes, it offers an empirical commentary on the patterns of existence, giving the viewer the impression of witnessing the opening scene of the story of a relationship.
Never framed and kept in a dark archival storage between protective acid-free paper.
The displayed photos are part of the description.
