Alchemy was a medieval natural science that preceded today’s chemistry and pharmacology. The alchemists’ aims included the production of gold, silver and other precious metals.
It is said that the legendary Philosopher’s Stone served this purpose.
The Codex Splendor Solis, produced around 1582, is the most beautiful illuminated manuscript ever written on the science of alchemy. On the Philosopher’s Stone and the refinement of the soul.
The manuscript, which treats fundamental questions on topics of religion, astrology, and alchemical symbolism, is decorated with 22 magnificent full-page illustrations. The highlight are 19 full-page miniatures depicting a wide variety of chemical processes, also with the help of the planetary gods and their sons.
