Small devotional altar with Madonna and Child
France (attributed), early 20th century | Neo-Gothic style
Suggestive wall-mounted devotional altar in carved and painted wood, attributed to French production of the early 20th century, crafted in an elegant Neo-Gothic style.
The structure, finely worked with ogee arches, spires and pierced motifs, is enriched by hinged doors decorated with gilded filigree. In the center it houses a delicate depiction of the Madonna and Child, painted with a warm-toned palette and enriched with refined details, intended for private devotion.
These altars were placed in homes as places of domestic prayer and today represent interesting testimonies of European popular religiosity, as well as being sought after by sacred art collectors.
