Description from the seller
Angelo Caduto – Patinated terracotta sculpture on a marble base – 20th century
"The work evokes the famous iconography of the Fallen Angel, made famous in the 19th century by Alexandre Cabanel's painting L'Ange Déchu.
A sculpture of great emotional impact depicting a Fallen Angel, realized in patinated terracotta and mounted on an elegant marble base. The work draws inspiration from the renowned iconography of Lucifer the fallen, reinterpreting the moment of maximum psychological tension: not the definitive defeat, but the instant in which pride, pain, and anger coexist in the same gaze.
The composition immediately strikes with its strong dynamism. The body is represented in a gathered and dramatic torsion, with broken arms that emphasize the sense of fragmentation and loss, transforming what might appear as a mutilation into a powerful expressive choice. The figure seems to fold onto itself, restraining a force that still seeks to break free.
The true focal point of the piece is the face. The gaze, directed upward yet veiled by an intense inner shadow, succeeds in merging two opposing emotions: a restrained, still living and proud anger, and a deep sadness, almost the awareness of one’s irrevocable fall. It is an intense expression, capable of involving the observer and suggesting an inner conflict that goes beyond mere religious representation, becoming a universal symbol of pride, rebellion, and human fragility.
Also notable is the anatomical rendering. The torso, modeled with great plastic sensitivity, highlights the tension of the musculature through soft planes and chiaroscuro transitions that give vitality to the surface. Every detail, from the deeply sculpted curls to the volumes of the chest, reveals careful study of the human figure and classic tasteful modeling.
The patina with green-bronze hues recalls the appearance of ancient metal fusions, enhancing the reliefs of the terracotta and giving the work a sculptural character of great elegance. The marble base completes the composition, enhancing its presence and making it ideal for both a private collection and as a bold decorative element for interior spaces.
A work capable of combining pathos, technique, and decorative value, destined for lovers of figurative sculpture, Symbolist art, and subjects inspired by classical imagery.
