Description from the seller

Hippocrates – Opera quae extant Graece et Latine – Venice, Giunti, 1588

Hippocratis Coi Opera quae extant Graece et Latine veterum codicum collatione restituta, novo ordine in quattuor classes digesta, interpretationis Latinae emendatione, et scholiis illustrata, a Hieronymo Mercuriali Foroliviensi.
Venice: Apud Iuntas, 1588.

A significant Renaissance edition of the complete extant works of Hippocrates, edited by the celebrated physician Hieronymus Mercurialis (Girolamo Mercuriale, 1530–1606), one of the foremost medical scholars of the sixteenth century.

This copy opens with the finely engraved chalcographic title page, followed by Michele Colombo's Index. It is then followed by the first volume, with its own printed title page:

Operum Hippocratis Coi quae Graece et Latine extant tomus primus, continens primam et secundam classem.

The Second Class (Secunda Classis) begins with its own half-title page.

Collation:

Index: [132] pp.
Main text: [4], 374, [6], 48 pp.
Folio (approximately 34 × 24 cm).

Binding: Contemporary full vellum over boards.

Condition:
The binding shows expected wear and light abrasions consistent with age. The engraved title page and the first four leaves have been professionally repaired, with no significant loss of text. Internally, the volume is generally clean and well preserved, with only occasional light foxing and minor age-related toning. The paper remains strong and crisp, and the text is remarkably clear throughout.

Printed in Greek and Latin.

A highly desirable Renaissance medical edition, representing one of the most influential sixteenth-century presentations of the Hippocratic corpus, edited by one of the leading physicians of the Renaissance and produced by the renowned Giunti press in Venice. Suitable for collectors of early medicine, classical texts, and important scientific works.
