Octave Rotsaert (1885-1964) - Sculpture, Good Samaritan - 12 cm - Patinated bronze

A bronze relief plaque depicting the parable of the Good Samaritan, by the Belgian sculptor Octave Rotsaert (Bruges 1885–1964). The Samaritan, wrapped in a heavy cloak, bends over the wounded traveller and supports him with an outstretched hand, while in the background the priest and the Levite turn away — the full narrative of Luke 10 compressed into one scene.

The relief is sand-cast with a hollow reverse showing the negative of the composition. The modelling is loose and expressive, with deeply folded drapery and strong contrast between the polished high points and the dark recesses. The plaque has a warm brown patina with golden-bronze highlights on the raised areas; the irregular, slightly undulating edges are as cast. Signed "O. Rotsaert" in the cast, lower left.

Rotsaert trained and worked in Bruges, where several of his public monuments still stand. His religious reliefs, including this composition, circulated in his lifetime and are documented in Belgian auction records.

Condition: Good
Good overall condition with age-appropriate wear. The patina is intact with natural rubbing on the high points. A few small spots of reddish oxidation near the lower edge. The wavy edges and open reverse are original to the casting process, not damage. No repairs observed.
