Unfolding continues Lionel Nemeth's exploration of gaze and the body. Here, the figure reveals itself only partially. The lower body gradually fades into the composition, forcing the viewer to complete the image mentally.
What do we see when the object of the gaze becomes incomplete? What do we imagine when something is not shown?
A technical and artistic innovation:
Nemeth is the only artist in the world to develop figurative string art in a rectangular format. This technique, rooted in decades of string art practice, has been transformed by Nemeth to explore figurative anatomy in a rectangular composition, opening a new direction for the medium.
Built from thousands of black threads manually taut between brass nails, the work creates a dual effect. Up close, one can discern the complex network of tension and structure. From afar, the image crystallizes into a figure suspended between presence and absence.
The title Unfolding suggests a process, a becoming, rather than a fixed form. It is an invitation to look differently.
