A rare volume, very early 1904 first edition with texts by Dorothy Menpes accompanied by 100 color plates inserted out of the text, protected by captioned tissue guards reproducing Mortimer Menpes’s watercolors and tempera during a trip to Venice, bound in publisher’s cloth with gold titles and ornaments on the front board and the spine, decorations with raised-ink stamping on the front board and spine, slight signs of wear to the binding at the corners and edges with a few stains, front cover with a visible internal cut – see photos. Inside, the pages are slightly creased downward but the text and illustrations remain clean. External covers slightly warped, page 162 misses one illustration and a captioned tissue guard. A rarity."
