Description from the seller
French School, mid-20th century.
Rural landscape with a farmstead.
Oil on canvas. Signature illegible.
Interesting landscape painting from the French school, dating to the mid-20th century, created within a post-Impressionist sensibility of luminous and atmospheric character. The composition depicts a rural view with a road, trees, and buildings in the background, possibly a manor or small agricultural complex, integrated into a lush vegetation environment.
The scene is organized by a large tree on the left, whose dark mass acts as a natural frame and contrasts with the clarity of the sky and the architecture situated on the horizon. The curved path in the foreground guides the eye toward the back, creating serene depth and a very balanced reading of the landscape.
From a stylistic standpoint, the work relates to French post-Impressionist landscape painting, especially due to the loose brushwork, the construction of forms through color spots, and the importance given to ambient light. The artist does not seek a meticulous description of the motif but rather to convey a general impression of the landscape, with particular attention to the contrasts between vegetation, earth, and sky.
The palette combines deep greens, ochres, earth tones, yellows, and luminous whites, contributing to a warm and slightly vibrant atmosphere. The treatment of the trees and the terrain is resolved with quick brushstrokes and areas of thicker texture, while the sky and the background buildings are presented with lighter, more vaporous execution.
The work has an intimate and decorative character, well suited for collectors of European landscape painting, French school of the 20th century, and works with post-Impressionist tradition.
The painting is on canvas and does not have a stretcher. It is currently presented under glass protection. It has not been examined outside the frame.
Condition: the general state of the work is as seen in the photographs, so it is advisable to carefully review the images before bidding.
It is framed. The frame is included as a gift and is not part of the artwork’s valuation.
