Lorenzo Lambertini - De Synodo Dioecesana Libri Tredecim - 1760

Rare and valuable eighteenth-century edition (Settecentina) printed in Parma in 1760 by the famous typography of the Brothers Borsi. The work, entitled De Synodo Dioecesana Libri Tredecim, represents the legal-pastoral masterpiece of Prospero Lambertini, written before his ascent to the papal throne as Pope Benedict XIV. It is a distinctly local and highly limited issue: to date there are only 3 copies officially catalogued in the national Italian catalog (OPAC SBN) and very few copies in international databases (WorldCat).

The work is complete in two volumes and is structured as follows:
Tomo I: Contains the two-color title page (red and black) with the great printer’s mark of the Brothers Borsi, the first books of the treatise, and the closing page with the formula Finis Tomi Primi.
Tomo II: Contains its respective title page printed in red and black, the conclusion of the treatise, the important documentary appendix Instructio Sacræ Congregationis Concilii (from page 377), and the extensive final Index Rerum (Index of subjects) in two columns that closes on page 466 with the word Finis.

Included in the lot (Exceptional rarity):
Within the volumes is preserved a precious and rare eighteenth-century sacred devotional engraving printed on blue silk ("vestina"), depicting the Virgin of Sorrow with the heart pierced by seven swords between two bishops in pontifical attire, all enclosed within an elaborate garland of roses. The print is signed on the plate by the Emilian engraver "Gio: Abbati fec." The silk artifact is in splendid condition, preserved in the dark between the pages.

Typographical and ornamental details:
The volumes are richly decorated inside with wood-cut initials inserted in floral insets and large wood-engraved tailpieces (vignettes with baskets of flowers and complex ecclesiastical symbols). The texts include forms and decrees of the Sacred Congregation bearing the printed signatures of the Cardinal Prefect Origus and the Secretary.

State of preservation:
Excellent overall condition. Contemporary full parchment binding, firmly attached and structurally solid, with the original leather inlays and gilded embellishments impressed dry on the five raised spines. The edges are original and colored in red-brown. Interiors fresh, printed on sturdy handmade watermarked paper of the period; the leaves are stable, with wide margins, showing the natural and slight time-warping and free from major foxing, deep woodworm, or destructive water damage. An excellent and genuine opportunity for collectors of antique and ecclesiastical books.
