F. Ehrlich (XX) - Der Golf von Saint-Tropez

Notes on condition:
The painting is in good condition for its age. The gilded wooden frame with a French slip, which stylistically matches very well, is a free bonus. The frame has some minor signs of wear, cracks and chips (see photos), which may not be noticeable from a distance. Nevertheless, replacing the frame would be advisable!

Worth knowing:
The painting very likely originates from Felix Ehrlich (September 1, 1866 in Berlin – March 28, 1931 in Berlin). Apart from the signature bottom left, this is not unequivocally verifiable. Ehrlich studied painting since 1883 at the Königsberg Art Academy with Carl Steffeck and became his master student in 1888. Back in Berlin, he was appointed court painter in 1896. In the same year he married Bertha Homoth. Felix Ehrlich portrayed Otto von Bismarck as well as Emperor Wilhelm II and his consort, the crown prince couple and many high officials and officers. After photographs by Hoffotografen (including Reichard & Lindner, Thomas Heinrich Voigt) he created about sixty oil portraits of the Kaiser in various uniforms. Portraits of the monarch as Grand Admiral in museum collections show a moderate influence of impressionism in color and stroke. At least three portraits of Wilhelm II in field-gray uniform were widely published during World War I as color reproductions on postcards. Ehrlich was also active as a genre painter.
