Icon - Christ Pantocrator - Wood - Hand-painted

Christ Pantocrator (Christos Pantokrator), one of the most emblematic representations of Byzantine and Russian art.

Christ is depicted from half-length, facing the viewer frontally.
With the right hand he performs the traditional blessing gesture.
With the left hand he holds an open Gospel.
The cruciform nimbus (halo with the cross) bears the Greek letters Ο Ω Ν ("He Who Is/ the One Who Is"), taken from Exodus 3:14, where God reveals Himself to Moses as "I am who I am".
On both sides of the head appear the Greek abbreviations:
IC (ΙΗΣΟΥΣ) = Jesus.
XC (ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ) = Christ.
The text of the Gospel

The book is written in ecclesiastical Slavonic. Although part of the text is hidden by perspective, the passage is clearly discernible:

"Приидите ко Мне вси труждающиися и обремененнии, и Аз упокою вы."

In Spanish:

"Venid a mí todos los que estáis fatigados y agobiados, y yo os daré descanso." (Matthew 11:28)

It is one of the most common texts in Russian Christ Pantocrator icons.

Fine craquelure typical of antiquity.
