Description from the seller
Title: The Mass
School: French Impressionist School, 19th century
Style: French impressionism with realist and genre influences
Technique: Oil on panel
Circle and artistic influences: Work related to the circle of French painters dedicated to depicting religious scenes and everyday life during the second half of the 19th century. Its composition reflects the influence of French realism and naturalism, especially in the individualized treatment of the characters, the restrained chromatic palette, and the direct observation of popular customs.
The work represents the interior of a church during the celebration of a Mass. Several women dressed in dark clothes and white head coverings remain seated and composed, while in the foreground a young altar boy in liturgical garments of white and red stands out. The temple’s architecture, defined by arches and stone walls, creates an austere and solemn atmosphere.
The composition uses a palette dominated by ocher, brown, and black tones, illuminated by the whites of the headdresses and the intense red of the altar boy’s vestments. The expressive treatment of the faces and the natural poses contribute a strong human and genre character to the scene.
Observations: It presents restorations, wear, rubbing, small losses of pictorial layer and pinpoint perforations visible, in keeping with its age.
Measurements: 44.3 × 29 cm.
