About Benromach Distillery
History and Revival: Founded in 1898 in Forres, Benromach experienced a turbulent history marked by various closures and changes in ownership, culminating in an almost permanent closure in 1983. In 1993, the renowned company and independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail purchased the distillery—which had by then been largely stripped of its old equipment—fully renovated it, and officially resumed production in 1998 in the presence of the then-Prince Charles.
Traditional Speyside Style: Unlike many modern Speyside whiskies (which tend to be entirely unpeated and very fruity or woody), Benromach stands out for its deliberate choice to recreate the classic, artisanal Speyside style of the 1950s and 1960s: a lightly peated malt with a rich, oily, and balanced profile.
Artisanal Production: It is one of the smallest distilleries in Speyside. The entire process is managed manually (without computer automation), and bottling takes place without chill-filtration.
Tasting Notes (Benromach 21 Years)
Maturation for 21 years exclusively in first-fill casks gives this Single Malt a smooth, complex, and perfectly balanced character.
Color: Deep golden amber with warm copper highlights.
Nose: Sweet honey, dried fruit, and sherry spices. Notes of bitter orange (Seville orange), fresh raspberries, baked apples, and cinnamon emerge, accompanied by a subtle undertone of very delicate peat smoke and toasted oak.
Palate: Rich and velvety. The first sip reveals dark chocolate, toffee, red fruits, and aromatic herbs. Notes of black pepper, ginger, and a crisp bread crust then develop, all enveloped by Benromach’s signature light smokiness.
Finish: Long, elegant, and persistent. It leaves lingering impressions of candied citrus peel, spiced oak, cocoa, and a pleasant hint of rustic smoke.
